About the organisation

Brotherhood of St. Laurence (BSL) is a leading social justice organisation that works alongside people experiencing disadvantage to address the fundamental causes of poverty in Australia. BSL’s purpose is to advance a fair Australia through its leadership on policy reform, partnerships with communities, and the quality of its services. With more than 1,500 staff and over 1,000 volunteers, BSL delivers services across early childhood, youth, employment, disability, aged care, financial wellbeing and community participation. Highly regarded for its combination of evidence-based advocacy, research and service delivery, BSL plays a significant role in influencing policy and systems reform. Guided by its vision of an Australia free of poverty and an ambitious Strategy 2030 agenda, BSL is committed to creating a fairer, more compassionate and just society where everyone can thrive.

About the role

Reporting to the Executive Director and as a key member of the Executive Team, the Chief Finance Officer will provide strategic financial leadership to support the delivery of BSL’s vision, purpose and Strategy 2030. Leading Finance and Operational Excellence, the CFO will develop and execute the organisation’s financial strategy, overseeing financial stewardship, organisational performance, governance, procurement, reporting and business planning across a complex and highly respected organisation.

A trusted adviser to the Executive Director, Board, Board Committees, and Executive, the CFO will provide proactive insights and recommendations that strengthen decision-making, financial sustainability and organisational performance. The role will lead multi-year budgeting and resource allocation processes, enhance financial systems and reporting, support major transformation initiatives, contribute to fundraising and property strategy objectives, and help position BSL to meet future opportunities and challenges. Building on the strong foundations already in place, the CFO will focus on strengthening capability, trust, financial discipline and organisational effectiveness while fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability and continuous improvement.

About you

You are a contemporary and strategic finance executive with experience as a CFO, Deputy CFO or senior finance leader within a complex organisation. Ideally bringing experience from the community, charitable, government, health, aged care or human services sectors, you combine strong financial and commercial acumen with an appreciation of purpose-led organisations and their operating environments.

An authentic and values-led leader, committed to developing people and creating a one-team culture, you are recognised for your integrity, sound judgement and ability to build trusted relationships. You possess a strong enterprise leadership mindset, are comfortable working closely with Boards and executive teams, and have demonstrated success leading high-performing teams through growth and organisational evolution. Strategic in outlook, you think beyond the immediate horizon, balancing financial discipline with innovation and long-term impact. Most importantly, you will bring a genuine connection to BSL’s purpose, vision and values, with a leadership style characterised by respect, care, accountability and a desire to create lasting change for Australians experiencing disadvantage.
