  • Risk leadership in a mutual bank
  • Purpose-led, member-owned financial institution
  • Protecting and enabling a community-focused bank

About the organisation

BankVic commenced operations in 1974, to improve the financial wellbeing of Victoria Police members and their families. More than fifty years on the organisation’s services now extend to members of the health, emergency and public services sectors. Victorian based, BankVic’s members have now grown to over 120,000 members with $3.8 billion in assets. BankVic prides itself on still being small enough to care about the financial wellbeing of each and every one of its members. The organisation exists to strengthen the communities it serves aiming to build healthy communities that are financially, socially and environmentally sustainable. The bank is in good regulatory standing with APRA and operates with an embedded culture of accountability, flexibility, and genuine investment in its people.

About the role

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer and functionally accountable to the Board, the Chief Risk Officer (CRO) provides independent oversight and strategic leadership of BankVic's risk management, compliance, and financial crime functions. The CRO leads a team of eight across enterprise risk and compliance, coordinates the Board Risk Committee, and manages regulatory relationships with APRA, AUSTRAC, and ASIC. The role carries accountability as an Accountable Person under the Financial Accountability Regime (FAR) and as BankVic's AML/CTF Compliance Officer. This is not a transformation mandate – frameworks are established and the risk culture is strong – but the CRO must be a genuine enabler of BankVic's continued growth, providing independent challenge at executive level while keeping the business moving forward safely. The CRO contributes as a full peer on the Executive Leadership Team and must be as comfortable in a board room as they are working alongside a lean, hands-on team.

About you

You are an experienced risk executive with a genuine banking background, ideally having served as a CRO or equivalent senior risk leader within a complex financial services institution. Your board-level presence is established – you present with credibility, coordinate effectively with board committees, and manage regulatory relationships with APRA, AUSTRAC, and ASIC without difficulty. You understand the distinction between risk management and compliance enforcement, and you approach the risk function as a strategic partner to the business rather than a gatekeeper. Pragmatic and commercially grounded, you filter material risk from background noise and provide constructive, independent challenge at executive level without creating friction. You are tertiary qualified in risk, finance, accounting or a related discipline, with postgraduate qualifications preferred. Critically, you are genuinely aligned to a purpose-led, member-owned organisation, and are comfortable operating within such an organisation’s associated scale, processes and culture.
