- Lead statewide compliance and sanctions
- Victoria's independent environmental regulator
- Prevent pollution and waste harm
About the organisation
Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) is the state's environmental regulator, working to prevent and reduce the harmful effects of pollution and waste on Victorian communities and ecosystems. Operating under a strong legislative mandate and a science-based approach, EPA partners with government, industry and the public to protect the environment and human health. This organisation is values-led, future-focused, and committed to delivering lasting impact for all Victorians.
About the role
As the Director, you will lead EPA's statewide compliance monitoring and sanctions functions and guide its frontline regulatory workforce. You will ensure that regulatory actions, decisions and sanctions including inspections notices, compliance advice, infringements, and official warnings, are consistent and proportionate across Victoria, in line with EPA's Compliance and Enforcement Policy. Reporting to the Executive Director, Regulatory Operations and Sector Regulation and leading a large and diverse team based across the state, you will set standards for regulatory practice, decision-making and performance, and oversee planning, budgets and workforce capability. As a leadership team member, you will advise the CEO and Senior Executive Committee on regulatory risk, enforcement and operational performance. Success will mean robust relationships with government, co-regulators and internal and external stakeholders, and regular travel across metropolitan and regional Victoria to stay connected to frontline work.
About you
You are an experienced senior regulatory leader who has led large, complex compliance, enforcement or sanctions functions at executive level in government or a comparable regulatory environment. You understand environmental regulation and use regulatory and sanctions tools effectively, ideally supported by tertiary qualifications in science, law, environmental management, public policy or a related discipline. You have led dispersed frontline teams, strengthened consistency and performance, and delivered organisational change. You bring sound judgement to sensitive regulatory matters, influence senior stakeholders and represent EPA credibly with government, industry and the community. You build teams that take pride in their work and responsibility for their decisions. Your leadership will help turn fair, consistent regulation into stronger protection for Victoria's communities and environment.
