  • Australian peak industry organisation
  • Lead strategic communications at a sector inflection point
  • Shape the narrative of Australia's energy future

About the organisation

This leading Australian peak industry body represents a rapidly growing and strategically vital sector, with a membership base spanning major publicly listed corporates through to small-scale operators. As a not-for-profit, membership-driven organisation, it works to accelerate the nation’s energy transition and engages across industry, government, and the broader community. At a pivotal moment for the country, the organisation is undertaking a deliberate strategic reset to further cement its role as a constructive and influential voice in the policy and advocacy landscape.

About the role

Reporting to the Chief Policy and Impact Officer and working in close partnership with the Chief Executive Officer, the General Manager - Communications is a newly created role responsible for defining and executing the organisation's communications strategy at a critical juncture. Central to the role is the development of a disciplined, coherent communications framework that directly underpins the organisation's advocacy and policy objectives - shaping how the organisation engages government, media, industry, and the public, and ensuring its voice carries authority and consistency. The role requires a strategic thinker who can translate complex policy positions into clear, compelling narratives, and who understands how communications and campaigning work together to shift opinion and influence outcomes. Beyond advocacy, the role encompasses the marketing of a significant events portfolio, requiring commercially informed planning and strong value proposition development. Leading a multidisciplinary team, the appointee will set strategic direction while remaining practically engaged in delivery. Key internal relationships span the policy, membership, and events functions, as well as the organisation's National Spokesperson.

About you

You are a senior communications leader with extensive experience advising executive teams and driving enterprise-wide communications strategies. Your background may span the public or private sector - what matters is your demonstrated capability across media relations, integrated campaign strategy, advocacy communications, and omnichannel execution. You understand how to build and deploy communications as a lever for influence, and you bring experience in environments where the stakes of public narrative are high. Your ability to operate with autonomy alongside a high-calibre executive team, combined with your commercial instincts and fluency in the policy and advocacy landscape, positions you well for a complex, fast-moving context. You are a disciplined communicator who brings rigour to brand voice and messaging, and a pragmatic leader who builds cultures of accountability. For values led, strategic communications professionals, this is a rare and impactful opportunity to work in service of one of the most consequential transitions of our time.
