  • Key leadership opportunity shaping direction and outcomes
  • Partner with the CFO to oversee and maintain effective stewardship
  • Strong purpose led culture

About the organisation

The Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne (CAM) is the largest Archdiocese in Australia and one of the largest globally, encompassing a diverse range of communities, cultures, and ministries that serve 1.1 million Catholics. Rooted in a rich tradition of faith, service, and community, the Archdiocese embraces a diverse and vibrant network of parishes, schools, ministries, and outreach programs, providing pastoral care, education, financial services, social welfare, and administrative support to the wider community.

About the role

Reporting to the CFO, the Head of Finance leads the day to day finance operations of CAM and its related entities, providing enterprise wide operational finance leadership. The role ensures the integrity, efficiency and scalability of financial management across statutory compliance, transactional services, treasury operations and finance systems, while also preparing and presenting high quality Board and ELT reports that tell the story behind the numbers through insight, analytics, risk assessment and observations. As a senior leader, the Head of Finance builds capability within the team, drives accountability and a high performance culture, champions continuous improvement, and owns system enhancements to streamline processes and improve efficiency. The role also acts as the primary finance partner to stakeholders, building strong relationships and representing the finance function at Board and executive forums as required.

About you

CA or CPA qualified, you bring demonstrated experience leading a complex finance operations function within a medium to large organisation, ideally across multiple entities. A confident people leader, you can manage senior leaders and specialists and have successfully built capability and accountability within multidisciplinary finance teams. With excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills and strong problem solving capability, you communicate financial matters clearly and practically to non-finance stakeholders, and you are comfortable representing finance at board and executive level. You are disciplined, proactive, and ownership-oriented — someone who takes initiative, moves at pace, and is positioned to grow and develop. With a solid understanding of internal controls, segregation of duties and financial risk management, you have also demonstrated success leading systems, data and process improvement initiatives in close partnership with IT. Importantly, you are comfortable operating in purpose-led organisations where governance, stewardship, and accountability are paramount and have a genuine respect of the mission and values of the Catholic Church.
