- Broad advisory remit
- Major Australian university in transition
- Supporting institutional governance and compliance
About the organisation
This well-established university has a strong reputation for technology, innovation and industry engagement . With multiple campuses and a diverse student and research community, the organisation operates within a complex regulatory environment and is executing an ambitious long-term strategy. The Legal, Risk and Compliance function plays an integral role in supporting the institution's operations, governance and strategic objectives.
About the role
Reporting to the General Counsel, the Senior Legal Counsel and Legal Operations Manager (SLC) provides high-quality legal advice across a broad range of matters, including compliance and integrity (whistleblower, fraud, counter foreign interference and privacy), disputes and litigation, and corporate advisory and governance. The role independently manages complex and sensitive matters across multiple jurisdictions and legal disciplines and directs external legal providers as required. Alongside substantive legal work, the SLC will lead the legal operations function, driving improvements to legal systems and processes, engaging with third-party vendors, and implementing evolving technology solutions, including AI. The role collaborates widely across the institution, advises and trains staff on emerging legal issues and acts as delegate to the General Counsel when required.
About you
You are an admitted Australian legal practitioner at senior associate or special counsel level with experience gained in private practice, the public sector or in-house. Your legal background spans a range of complex and sensitive matters in a highly regulated, innovative and fast-paced environment. Commercially aware, you enjoy coordinating and running complex matters, and thrive in circumstances where you apply your legal skills to new contexts. You bring genuine interest in legal operations and emerging technologies and can translate that interest into practical change. You are service-oriented, collegial and not precious about rolling up your sleeves. You are organised, self-directed and capable of managing a varied workload with competing deadlines. Your communication is clear and well-calibrated to your audience, and you work constructively with stakeholders at all levels. Experience in the higher education or research sectors is an advantage but not essential.
