About the organisation
The Higher Education and Skills Group (HESG) in the Department of Education and Training provides Victorians with access to high-quality vocational education and training that leads to current and future jobs. Record investment has placed the TAFE and training sector at the heart of Victoria’s economic and social recovery from the global pandemic by ensuring that Victorians get the training they need, for the job they want. HESG works closely with industry partners to develop a system that meets the needs of both industry and government, while supporting individual students to get the skills and education they need. Promoting an integrated, student-centred approach to post-secondary education, HESG facilitates participation and achievement by supporting partnerships between learners, providers, employers, and advising on public funding and regulation. HESG manages the Government-funded training market, public provider governance and accountability, Higher Education and the apprenticeship system.
About the role
The Assistant Deputy Secretary (SES2) is a new role in HESG to focus on economic recovery and jobs growth, following the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Providing trusted advice to the Deputy Secretary, Department Board, Ministers and stakeholders, the Assistant Deputy Secretary will forge key partnerships and coordinate complex initiatives and programs around post-secondary education and employment. As a part of the leadership team assisting the Deputy Secretary, the Assistant Deputy Secretary will contribute to the strategic direction and operations of the group, so more Victorians benefit from education and training, business productivity and drive excellence in the training and the tertiary sector. The Assistant Deputy Secretary presents a unique opportunity to drive a significant reform agenda across the higher education and training sectors.
About you
A proven public sector leader, you are highly familiar with training and tertiary systems and draw from broad experience. Known for your energy, people leadership and ability to get things done, you relish complex stakeholder and change environments. Your well-judged and effective communications around programs, large scale project management and governance are pivotal to success. A trusted adviser to government, you work well with diverse colleagues, empower your people and collaborate widely to find solutions. You balance short term needs with long term benefits, demonstrate resilience and are motivated by challenge and community impact.
